In my mind, Macy’s has always meant the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the magic of the holiday season starting. The excitement of Thanksgiving morning, the hustle and bustle of cooking and preparing for family and a great meal. It feels good. But this year Macy’s means Spring…and by that I mean the 49th Annual Flower Show!
This is actually the first time I’ve wandered inside to see the show. I planned to walk the inside first and snap photos of the window displays afterwards. It was March 26, the first day of the show and guaranteed to be a madhouse, but I didn’t care. I wanted to see the flowers at their freshest and boy, I was not disappointed.
Walking in the front entrance was like walking in during the holiday season – you can feel everyone breathing in the excitement of the beautiful surroundings. The first thing to hit me was the rainbow across the main center aisle. It drew everyone forward towards it. At the end was a radiant sun with a base of yellow and orange lilies. It was the biggest draw for selfies and poses.
The flower sheep absolutely cracked me up! There’s something about their totally round shape that reminds me of Warren Kimble’s rustic farm animals with their giant bodies and tiny heads. The sheep are part of the “dreams” theme.
The mezzanine makes a perfect setting for the flowers, it truly makes you feel like you’re surrounded by bouquets. There are 15,000 plants and over 60 different species of flowers here!
The mezzanine level was mostly dedicated to the floral displays highlighting Dior’s fragrances. Dior Sauvage Elixir for men has main notes including lavender, licorice, and cinnamon. I don’t know about men smelling like lavender, but it made for a beautiful display.
I think they did a fabulous job with the perfume arrangements. It was hard to get photos, being so crowded, but I managed to snap a few that capture the atmosphere. I was surprised that between the perfume and the flowers the scents were not overpowering. The staff really were friendly; not too pushy. It couldn’t have been easy for them putting up with a crush of sight-seers (like myself!).

The marketing was working…I wanted to buy perfume. And I didn’t even know what it smelled like!

I hung out a few minutes watching the crowd try samples and just breathing in the luxury.

Back outside it took a long while to get a clear shot at the windows. Lots of ladies took pics of each other smiling in front of the models. I love how the metal rays of the sun in this window reflected the buildings and crowds (and me) of Herald Square.
The theme of the show this year is Big Dreams Bloom Here, with a “dreamscape of fluffy clouds and whimsical floral landscapes”. I think the window above captures that idea perfectly.
With the reflections she looks like she’s riding a cloud down 6th Ave. I’d do that!

The windows were designed by students from The Fashion Institute of Technology on 7th Ave. Outstanding!
More wonderful detailing of the windows on 6th Avenue. I wish I knew the designers of the beautiful dresses. And look at those shoes!
Herald Square is the plaza in front of Macy’s, the northern end of the intersection of Broadway and 6th Ave. It’s a great spot to grab shade (and a quick phone charge) on a hot summer day. Perfect for people watching. The fact that Koreatown is 2 blocks south gives it that much more flavor, literally. There are so many yummy spots to grab a meal on W. 32nd Street!
