I was walking in The Battery last weekend, taking in the gorgeous foliage, when I came upon Astoria again! I’d met the wild turkey in the park in May, and was thrilled to see her again.
I didn’t know it, but Astoria was right around the corner!

Astoria looked bigger than when I’d seen her in the Spring, I was happy to note.

She was getting in a good grooming session! You can see bits of fluff(?) dropping from her as she preened in the video below:
Wild turkeys preen – they use their beaks to spread their body oil along the shaft of their feathers to keep them waterproof.

Until a squirrel came too close and she jumped a mile!

I’ve had turkeys in my yard in the winter, so I know they can handle the cold, but being that it’s NYC I’ll still be a bit worried about her this winter. There aren’t many evergreens in the area to block the cold wind off the water. I’ll have to remember to bring a cup of corn seed on my winter visits.

Thanks for visiting Astoria with me! I’ll hope you’ll come back soon for more real photos of the real NYC.
