I never get tired of the ever-changing Battery. Though I prefer Spring, I can’t deny that Autumn is just as beautiful here. Scroll down and enjoy some photos of the park lush and golden…
The Promenade

The Promenade is where most folks rush to catch the ferry to Liberty Island and the Statue. It’s where I’d sit and have my breakfast, until the Battery Resilience Project began in 2024 and the barrier went up.

This is my favorite part of The Battery. The plantings here were phenomenal. You could enjoy a quiet sit on the benches and be surrounded by tall flowers. I’m hoping that when the project is completed it doesn’t resemble nearby Wagner Park, which was turned into a more open vista with less gardens.

This photo really shows the beauty of the London plane trees in the morning light. Miss New Jersey is at the water’s edge, getting ready to fill with a fresh load of passengers heading to Liberty Island:

A stiff December breeze blows tall grasses at The Battery:

It was a very quiet park back in December 2020. You can feel it’s almost winter.

The Bosque Gardens
The 4-acre Bosque gardens are between the water’s edge and the carousel. It’s the place to slow down and appreciate the artful plantings designed by Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf.

The tall plantings provide shelter where flowers are still able to bloom.

A wonderful contrast between the beauty of the garden and the Financial District beyond the park:

More of the plummy and bronze foliage. I took this photo last weekend in mid-November. Loving the Purpletop Vervain blooming against the seedy grasses.

A last look back towards the water’s edge before we move deeper into the park:

The Bosque Gardens run up to the back of the East Coast Memorial. There’s a small path between the barrier and the garden that I sometimes walk in the summer, when the plants are full, and no one can see me.

The woodland feel here is totally my style of garden. Below is Oak Leaf Hydrangea by the East Coast Memorial:

Just looking at these photos takes me right back to this sheltered, fragrant spot at The Battery.

The last flower of the year? December 2021 in the Bosque Garden.

SeaGlass Carousel
Autumn is just starting to touch the park in October.

The Carousel is nestled in bunches of beautiful flowers and grasses. Every season is stunning.

The Bosque Fountain
The dreamy Bosque Fountain is surrounded by London plane trees and plenty of benches. Asters still flower here in early November 2023.

Late November and the fountain is shut off for the winter.

A perfect autumn scene, as leaves fly by Castle Clinton National Monument (1808-11):

The Battery Oval and Woodland
A peaceful morning in early November by the Battery Oval:

Whether you’re taking in the big picture, or focusing on what’s in front of you, The Battery is filled with beauty.

The flower-shaped chairs on the Battery Woodland were designed by Andrew Jones, who called them Fleurt. He won a $10,000 prize for them in a design contest.

We’re nearing the edge of the park now, looking out at the Hugh Carey Tunnel ventilation building (1941) on Battery Place:

Leaves scuttle along on the Battery Bikeway. In the background is the stunning Alexander Hamilton Custom House (1907) at 1 Bowling Green, and the Bowling Green Station (my spaceship).

Thanks for walking with me through The Battery in autumn. I’ll hope you’ll come back soon for more real photos of the real NYC!
