Everywhere you look there’s new construction going on. Here’s a peek at three projects being built right now in Manhattan. Crazy good, or crazy bad? You decide!
Xadia Hotel, 58 West 39th St., Midtown

The first time I saw this building going up I truly did a double take. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one! From Sixth Avenue it looks like it’s going to topple over any second.

The front of the Hotel is at 58 West 39th Street, next to – and over – the beautiful Refinery Hotel (1912). Once completed, the supports attached to the roof of the Refinery Hotel will be removed. The Refinery Hotel sold their air rights to the owners of the Xandia, which gives them the ability to rise higher into the space above their building.

Maybe I’m just a nervous nelly, but I wouldn’t want to work on West 39th St. these days.

262 Fifth Avenue, NoMad
Next up on the crazy list is 262 Fifth Avenue. It’s another needle tower squeezed in next to a classic, stone building. This skinny giant will be 56 stories! Look how narrow it is, it’s a true “pencil tower”. 262 Fifth Avenue was designed by Russian firm Meganom.

262 Fifth Ave will be a new neighbor to 260 Fifth Ave, a 1900 stone, 12 story mixed use building.

For most people, the gripe with 262 Fifth Ave is that it blocks the view of the Empire State Building from the Madison Square Park / Flatiron area. Once you’re south of 28th Street you might as well forget it. This building truly has changed the view.

262 Fifth Avenue should be completed in the second half of 2025.
989 Sixth Avenue, Garment District – the Winner
989 Sixth Avenue recently reached the halfway point in height. It’s going to be 68 stories. I actually like the look of it. I just wish it wasn’t so close to the beautiful 1922 Haier Building. But maybe that’s part of the novelty.

I love the pleated glass on the front of the building. Here’s what the finished product will look like, according to C3D Architecture:

And for comparison, here’s a photo of the buildings that stood there prior to their demolition:

989 Sixth Avenue will be residential and is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
