Peninsula New York hotel lunar new year

Lunar New Year at The Peninsula New York

It must be February! The Peninsula New York is decorated for the Chinese Lunar New Year with their festive dragon. The dragon is on the marquee of the East 55th Street entrance. I’ll be honest, this is the first time I’ve seen it and I’m thrilled!

The five-star Peninsula New York has a traditional Lion Dance each year outside the hotel’s main entrance. Have you seen the Lion Dance I recorded a few weeks ago? Find it here. Observer listed The Peninsula as one of the best places in New York for afternoon tea. Until the end of February they offer a Lunar New Year Menu which includes Dim Sum, Steamed Sea Bass, Lion’s Head Meatballs and more. You can find out more here.

The 23-story, neoclassical building was built in 1905 and originally the Gotham Hotel, but it went into bankruptcy in 1908 – partly because it could not acquire a liquor license as it was too close to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. In the 1980s a three-story glass penthouse was built above the original roof and contains the hotel’s pool and fitness center. The hotel did originally have an enclosed dining terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue – that must have been wonderful.

“The Man with the Golden Gun” was partially filmed here in 1974 and Roger Moore, and the cast and crew stayed here.
