Sammy Buttons Experience, Pershing Square NYC

The Sammy Buttons Experience Plays Pershing Square

My youngest came along with my to NYC this past Saturday. The Sammy Buttons Experience were playing in Pershing Square and we couldn’t wait to hear them. We had discovered Sammy Buttons in Union Square a few years ago and loved his can’t-sit-still music.

The New York Times calls Sammy “The Master of Sidewalk Funk”. The Times article says he is a fourth-generation keyboardist and has been sharing his gift on the streets of NYC since 2020.

We made it to Pershing Square just before the final set started. And once it did, between the smooth keyboard and the percussion, we slid right into the groove of The Sammy Buttons Experience. And then the horns kicked in…

The band didn’t pause playing the whole set, just transitioned from one tune to another. It was great fun to hear them funktify songs like the Pink Panther theme, even childhood songs.

I was over the moon when Mikey G. @percussion_mike gave a solo. Percussion is so primitive, it really moves me.

After the set, Alex and I were so happy when Sammy came over. He thanked us for being there and I was happy to tell him that I’d be sharing their great music here at debbininthecity.com
