If you haven’t been to the SeaGlass Carousel in Battery Park you really need to put it on your NYC list. It’s ethereal music and luminescent “sea glass” fish will take you away to a magical world.
The carousel opened in 2015 as part of the Hurricane Sandy recovery plan. They couldn’t have made a better symbol of hope and beauty! The carousel is in line with the Battery’s history, as NYC’s first aquarium was here from 1896 to 1941. The carousel was designed by renowned set designer George Tsypin, who staged The Little Mermaid on Broadway. His idea was to create a mystical underwater adventure that enables the riders to “become” fish.
Riding the carousel, which has no center pole, you hear an adaptation of classics by Debussy, Mozart, and more, mixed with contemporary style music. Check it out:
A ride on the carousel is $6, and the day I finally rode it I knew it would be the best part of my trip. You feel as if you’re in an underwater ballet, and emerge calmer and happier.
